Tree Frogs of Maine

For the past ten weeks, I have been enrolled in a Herpetology class, exploring the lives of amphibians and reptiles worldwide. On Friday night, the class took a trip to find gray tree frogs, one of two tree frog species found in the state of Maine. We searched for them around a small pond and were happily greeted with a chorus of their calls. Some were on trees while others were perched along the moist bank. I managed to pick up two of them, but I much rather enjoyed watching their vocal sacs and many contracting muscles move as the trills to seek a mate continued. I took a picture of one while I held it, although it's not a very good photo, another of it on the ground, and I recorded part of the chorus. There were also many spring peepers calling, the smaller tree frog species in Maine, pictured in hand as well. It was a very satisfying night, in spite of the many bug bites I received all over my back.
